Campaign 2011-2013
In our uncertain and rapidly changing world, quality education for all remains unchallenged as the means to a free and open society. The NEF exists to enhance the Newburyport Public Schools and to allow everyone to help strengthen this vital resource in our city.
In 2011-2013, the NEF will once again target projects that will have strategic impact across the district. A world language lab, enhanced literacy program, and technology upgrades and renewal are focus areas for our new campaign as described below. With the support of our generous donors, we can achieve these and more in the next three years.
World Language Lab at the High School $85,000
Learning a foreign language is challenging without access to native speakers, but all students at Newburyport High School must learn a language. An interactive language lab allows students to hear those native speakers, practice their conversation skills, take foreign language AP exams and more. The current high school lab with its aged and broken equipment is failing our students. A new lab will engage students with lessons that incorporate audio, video, pictures, text and web resources as it builds the skills our global leaders of tomorrow will need.
Enhance Classroom Libraries K-8 $110,000
Does one learn to read or read to learn? The NEF-funded Literacy Closets helped the schools teach literacy in exciting ways with their new Comprehensive Literacy Program. We plan to further support the new program by building classroom libraries and enhancing reading materials in grades K-8. Classroom libraries will give teachers more and varied options when their new readers ask: “What can I read next?”
Upgrade Technology Tools K-12 $275,000
Public schools across the country struggle to find funds for the technology tools we take for granted at work and at home. Recently, an ad hoc committee reported a $1 million gap between what the Newburyport Public Schools have and what they need. Yet technology returns more than it costs—engaging today’s tech-savvy students, helping teachers tailor lessons to student needs, adding to the curriculum, and more. The NEF has pledged to renew and enhance technology with emphasis on projects with the greatest impact—such as a writing lab for all.
